If your storefront is a catalog of real objects with two finishes, start with photography and add 3D where variants hurt. If you sell configurable industrial equipment that does not exist as a single SKU, start with 3D and add photography when the first unit comes off the line.

Where photography still earns the hero frame

Buyers forgive a plain photo. They notice a wrong render.

Use photography for:

  • Proof adjacent to price and returns copy
  • Press and marketplace listings that prohibit synthetic hero assets

Branding ties the sets together — same light logic, same background family, same crop rules — so photo and render do not look like two companies sharing a cart. When both exist on one PDP, label pre-production renders honestly. A buyer who receives something different from the hero image will not care which medium lied.

Rights, masters, and the update bill

Photography rights live in the shoot contract: territories, duration, retouch layers, and whether you own raw files. 3D rights live in the model: who owns the mesh, who may re-light, whether the file exports to web, print, and AR.

Ask both vendors the same question: What does it cost to change one finish six months from now? Photography answers with a reshoot or a heavy retouch. 3D answers with a material swap — if the model was built for it. A cheap render that was not structured for variants becomes a new project anyway.

Store masters where the next producer can find them. A hero photo buried in a 2023 folder and a `.blend` file on a freelancer's laptop are the same failure mode.

Run the channel test before you sign
